Unilever Sustainable Living Plan sets an example on corporate responsibility in Asia.
Unilever Sustainable Living Plan sets an example on corporate responsibility in Asia.

ESG (environment, social responsibility, and governance) has grown increasingly significant for Asian investors in recent years. Several major corporations are beginning to take the lead on corporate responsibility and set an example for their colleagues. In this post, we investigate Unilever's Sustainable Living Plan and how has it done in Asia.

What is the Unilever Sustainable Living Plan?

To lessen Unilever's impact on the environment, the company has created the Unilever Sustainable Living Plan (USLP). As a part of the global sustainability drive, it practices throughout Asia with the intention of lowering emissions. It is also an effort enhancing the social and economic standing of Asian communities.

Corporate responsibility in the Philippines

Many examples are constantly being presented in the area. Unilever's collaboration with the Filipino Business for Social Progress (PBSP) to enhance the livelihoods of smallholder coconut farmers in the Philippines is one illustration of the USLP's influence in Asia. As part of the agreement, Unilever promised to source all of its coconut oil sustainably by 2023. It is also reputed to have given farmers training and support to enable them adopt sustainable agricultural methods.

Unilever delivers its sustainability reports on its progress toward its USLP goals on the regular basis. That is including its attempts to lessen its environmental effect, enhance the lives of smallholder farmers, and foster social responsibility in its business practices. Many groups have praised Unilever for its sustainability reporting. Furthermore, it was named #1 in the 2021 GlobeScan-SustainAbility Leaders Study, which assesses the sustainability leadership of businesses throughout the world.

Sustainable practices in other Asian countries

Another illustration is how Unilever lessens its environmental effect in Asia through the USLP. For one instance, USLP installs solar panels at its manufacturing facilities in Indonesia and India, which has assisted in lowering the company's greenhouse gas emissions.

Addition to its renewable energy adoption, Unilever has set a target to use 100% renewable electricity across its operations by 2030. Unilever has also invested in renewable energy projects in Asia, such as a wind farm in Tamil Nadu, India, which provides clean energy to its manufacturing sites in the region.

Overall, the Unilever Sustainable Living Plan is a good case study of a global sustainability initiative that has had a positive impact in Asia through its efforts to promote social responsibility, sustainability reporting, and renewable energy adoption.
